Traditional churches are built on the surface, however in certain cases, you need to go beneath the surface for the altar. Cave churches exist and they are phenomenal! I imagine that the atmosphere inside these churches isn't like your typical above-ground chapels. Did you know that some of the most ancient monasteries and churches were erected in caves? It's hard to find a better spot to meet with your god than inside the cave or on the top of a mountain. I'm not being sarcastic, I genuinely believe that.
